Following a string of poor results Tomasz Wiktorowski resigns from his role as Poland’s Fed Cup captain but the decision will not affect his work with Agnieszka Radwanska
Agnieszka Radwanska’s coach Tomasz Wiktorowski has resigned from his role has captain of Poland’s Fed Cup team.
The news comes just over a week after Poland were beaten 3-2 by Switzerland in the World Group play-offs, with star turn Radwanska going down to Timea Bacsinszky, before the Swiss clinched the victory in the doubles rubber with an epic 2-6, 6-4, 9-victroy.
Speaking to the Przegląd Sportowy daily, Jacek Muzolf, president of the Polish Tennis Association said Wiktorowski had resigned due to feeling “tired and burnt out” and insisted he had not been forced out of the Fed Cup set up.
The resignation caps a miserable week for Wiktorowski with Radwanska’s father Robert last week calling for the Pole to resign as his daughter’s coach following a miserable run of form in 2015.
“If Mr Wiktorowski has a smidgeon of honour he should resign immediately from training Agnieszka,’’ raged Radwanska Snr. “His place should be taken by a good, tried and tested trainer from the WTA.”
Radwanska, who has been coached by Wiktorowski on a full-time basis since 2011, has seen her form dip at an alarming rate this season, falling from sixth to ninth in the WTA rankings having failed to reach a final since the Canadian Open in August 2014.
Only four days ago, Martina Navratilova, who had been working on the Pole’s coaching staff since December 2014, announced her decision to quit her role citing an inability to commit to the role.
The announcement coincided with seventh-seeded Radwanska’s exit from last week’s exit from the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart after suffering a 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 defeat at the hands of Sara Errani.
